Shock absorbers and struts are key components in your steering and suspension system, contributing to how your ride feels and to stability and control of your vehicle. Both are crucial for handling as well as improving the overall integrity and wear of many of your vehicle’s parts.

Your shock absorbers automatically adjust to the road conditions, so a bumpy ride will feel smooth and you will not feel swaying on turns. Shocks also support the car so it does not lean forward during breaking or lean back when you accelerate.

Struts absorb bumps and movement much like shock absorbers, but will also provide structural support for the entire suspension system, including the coil springs, tie rods and tires. The struts play a key roll in breaking, steering and wheel alignment.

Replacing shocks and struts

Depending on your driving habits, use of your vehicle, and road conditions, your shocks and struts may last up to 100,000 miles. Make an appointment with our technicians if you notice the following:

  • Steering is sluggish
  • Excessive bouncing or squeaking going over bumps or curbs
  • Leaning forward when braking or backward when accelerating
  • Swaying or leaning when turning

Our team recommends replacing shocks and struts in pairs, or all four if the mileage on your car is nearing 100,000 miles.
